Safety is a cornerstone of the Bike the Pike initiative
We’ve taken every step to ensure our route is accessible for riders of all skill levels. Using the DVRPC’s Level of Traffic Stress (LTS) framework, the route prioritizes comfort and security by guiding cyclists through roads classified as LTS 1 through LTS4. Here’s what that means for you:
- LTS 1: These roads are suitable for almost anyone, offering the lowest stress level with features like low traffic volume, slower vehicle speeds, and dedicated bike infrastructure. Ideal for families, beginner cyclists, and anyone looking for a peaceful ride.
- LTS 2: Designed for “interested but concerned” riders, these routes are slightly busier but still provide a comfortable and safe experience for most adults. This level opens up cycling as a viable option for commuting or recreation without the need for advanced cycling skills.
- LTS 3: Designed for confident riders, these routes require familiarity with urban biking and moderate traffic but remain part of a connected and versatile network.
- LTS 4: High-stress routes are included where necessary to ensure connectivity throughout the corridor. These roads are intended for experienced cyclists who are comfortable navigating heavy traffic or challenging conditions.
By including a range of options, Bike the Pike provides something for everyone, from casual riders to seasoned cyclists. This inclusivity ensures that all cyclists have access to a comprehensive network, with routes designed to balance safety, connectivity, and the diverse needs of the community.
Why Does It Matter?
The Chester Pike Corridor has long been a challenging area for cyclists, with public feedback citing concerns about heavy traffic, poor road conditions, and limited bike lanes. Bike the Pike directly addresses these issues by providing safer, more accessible options for cycling. By incorporating a range of traffic stress levels, the route ensures that everyone—from families to experienced riders—has a path that meets their needs.
